One of the techniques used by both parties is to divide and conquer. They work to use almost any proposed legislation, except renaming post offices as a reason to go on the attack. Why?

First, the reference to post-office renaming. If you research proposed bills, voted on and signed into law you’ll find many that relate to renaming post offices. Why? Because it helps an incumbent as they can point to bills they introduced, passed and enacted into law.

It just looks good that they got bill passed into law, just as long as you don’t look too hard and ask exactly what bills they are talking about. The public do not, so they get away with it.

In a word or two, its flim-flam or sleight of hand, something that incumbents become very good at.

Over the years, politicians have found that if they can get the public to fight each other, then they can do what the want in the background. The public become so focused on opposing public positions that the politicians, and particularly the president can do things that the public don’t notice at the time. By the time they do, it’s far too late.

It’s the same for many bills that become law. They are passed but implementation is delayed, sometimes for years. Why? Because to separate what the politicians did, and the effect. When they separate the passage with the enforcement, they create distance.

And as they know that the public has a very short attention span, by the time the law has teeth either the anger at the new law has long gone, or the next election cycle will be over and it will be too late for the public to do anything about it.

I’m working on creating the “Levene Public Pain Index” that will tabulate the passage of laws and their enforcement dates using fourteen factors. I think that it will graphically show just how poisonous certain laws are, and help the public see how they are being screwed over in real time.

You can use the “Obamacare” law (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act) as an example. Just look at when the law takes effect ( years’ 2010 to 2020)… long after President Obama’s final election and retirement. I wonder why?

When the public becomes unified, the politicians become terrified, as this is the one behavior that deeply scares them. They aren’t scared by al-Qaeda, the massive debt we have, illegal drugs, wars on everything you can think of, or anything else. It’s that the public will become unified in its anger towards Washington and throw them out.

Fortunately, for them, it doesn’t happen very often. It needs to.
