What happened to the 16 lane highway?
When I first came to this country from England, I was amazed at the friendliness and generosity of the American public. I was also in awe of the freedoms, guaranteed under the American Constitution. Even though Great Britain was a free nation, the freedom here was different. I thought of it as a sixteen-lane highway.
As you know a sixteen-lane highway is unbelievably wide. You can drive in whatever lane suits you, at whatever speed, and not be too concerned about who else is on the road and is driving faster or slower.
To extend the metaphor, you had the freedom to succeed or fail. You had the freedom to live where you wanted, if you could afford it. You had the freedom to speak your mind, without peer pressure censorship. Taxes were reasonable, and almost everyone paid something to the Federal government. Now, only about 50% pay any Federal taxes at all, and the others get a free ride as so much government spending is borrowed.
Times have changed. We now have a six-lane highway. Yes, you can still do all of the above, but it’s different. Being a naturalized citizen for over thirty-five years, I have been particularly sensitive to the concept of freedom. And it’s being lost, one bit at a time.
Our government has been very slowly drawing a metaphoric noose around the American public’s neck. They have been so distracted by their daily minutiae that the have missed the big picture.
This is how fishermen catch large numbers of fish. They extend the nets far and wide and slowly close them around the contented, non-threatened fish. Slowly, slowly the nets close until the fish realize what’s happening. It’s too late… the nets close and the fish are trapped. That’s what’s happening to the American public… drip, drip, drip.
It’s true that many of the sixteen-lane freedoms are still in place, but the scope of how you live your lives is being eroded by the ever narrowing of the highway.
There have been so many laws passed in the past forty years, many overlapping each other to the point that no one really understands how they mesh together. It’s the government that plays God by deciding who to indict next.
If you think that you haven’t broken any laws and are not worried, you are wrong. As I said, there are so many laws that everyone has broken one or many. It’s just up to the government to decide who’s next on the list.
Yes, the chances are you’ll never be the indictment of the week, but that’s because you’re careful to drive on the ever-narrowing road and are more and more cautious.
The sad thing is that this country was founded on broad freedoms. Those freedoms are being eroded very quickly. It must be reversed.
