A part of my campaign is related to term limits. The president is subject to two terms because of the 22nd Amendment, but Congress isn’t. As such, they tend to hang on for as long as possible. Why? Because of power, being privileged and deferred to, feeling like they have become demigods (they aren’t) and pensions. Every year that they stay with their faces in the public trough, their Federal pensions grow, and grow and grow.

If you think about it, you’ll understand why I don’t think that a Congressional Term Limits Amendment will ever pass. Simply put, a Term Limits Amendment on Congress will never pass and be ratified by the states.

As such, if elected I will propose a bill that limits House members to four terms, eight years and the Senate, two or twelve years. Why? I think that it’s plenty of time to do what needs to be done. We need new blood in Congress, not the old congealed variety. The old timers have developed fixed positions, and are stuck in their ruts.

At this time, 32 Senators (20 Democrats, 12 Republicans) have been in office for twelve years or more and 199 Representatives, (107 Democrats, 92 Republicans) more that eight. They need to not run for reelection again and if they run, under my bill they’ll void their pensions.

Almost all will quit, but will use their massive, accumulating campaign war chests to influence people in Congress anyway. I’ll fix that in another bill.

My numbers may not be absolutely accurate due to some of them having discontiguous terms, but you get the point.

We need new blood in Congress. Voiding pensions if they stay too long, is the way to do that.
