Why presidential candidates run for office
No, it isn’t because they expect or even want to become president. Far from it.
It’s mostly smoke and mirrors, something that our politicians are very good at. Yes, a few are working hard to become president, notably Mitt Romney. Sad to say, as a fellow Republican, I very much doubt he’ll succeed. Based on my research the next Republican president will be Rick Santorum. But that’s another story.
No, the reason the leading candidates that have been followed by the media run is to make money and stay relevant. Take Michele Bachmann. Based on my observations, she was interested in gaining national prominence, selling her book and lining up her eventual political consulting business. It was a not so sly way to become known, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for a politician.
I’m not knocking that, as not enough people know me, so my election chances are directly related to the press I get.
The same goes for most of the candidates, particular our home town former Congressman, Newt Gingrich. It was reported that he was selling books, and posed for photographs with supporters for $50! And now that he’s gone, he’s left a trail of debts behind him.
A few actually wanted to become president. Most just used it as a stepping-stone for future business ventures.
They run as a way to gain national prominence, keep in the public eye, help their consulting businesses or so they can write a book or two and make money. That’s about it.
