My Republican party has caved again!
Sad to say, the party of conservatism, strong values and self-reliance has caved-in yet again to the Democrats and the president. Don’t they have a backbone? Do they even, under the alleged leadership of Speaker Boehner, attempt to stick to principles or are they just weak? You decide.
The Republicans caved on its threat to block raising the debt ceiling until we cut spending on a one to one ratio. Raising the debt ceiling is a yearly process that illustrates just how precarious our nation’s finances have become.
We are spending about a trillion dollars a year more than our government takes in. That’s increasing our debt by over $40,000 a second! Interest rates are extremely low so our debt service isn’t a big problem; when the interest rates climb it will be.
So when President Obama threatened to fight the Republicans over this, they just caved-in… just like that. Why? Because they think that the public will blame them for threatening to cause a default, while they pretend to wrestle the Democrats to get runaway spending under control. These fights are mostly theater.
Are they not aware that the public has a very short memory, and the next election cycle isn’t for nearly two years, a lifetime in politics?
The Republicans could require that the public give up their first-born child to be sacrificed two years before the next election, and few people would remember. Do you remember the “fiscal cliff” battle of just a few weeks ago, or is your memory getting a little hazy?
So what are the weaklings doing? They are increasing the debt ceiling for about another three months of binge spending, and will fight to”force” the Democrats to write a budget, something they haven’t done for a few years. Ha, ha.
The Democrats know that the Republicans are on the run, and will cave again. So much for leadership. The only reason that Speaker Boehner was reelected was that no Republican ran against him. Why? Too scary.
The Republican Party needs strength, not weakness. It reminds me (thus dating myself, although I’ll claim to have seen them in a museum) of the old advertisements for the Charles Atlas strength training kit where the tough guy at the beach kicks sand in the weakling’s face. The weakling buys the kit and is able to fight back.
It’s a shame that the Republican’s alleged leaders won’t be buying that kit.
